What are the parts of a NYSSMA instrumental audition?
1. Scales You must play 3 major scales from memory up and down! -play them in whole notes, keeping a steady tempo throughout-do not rush! Here are some suggestions (these scales can also be found in "Accent" on page 37):
C major: C D E F G A B C F major: F G A Bb C D E F B-flat major: Bb C D Eb F G A Bb G major: G A B C D E F# G
2. Solo Your solo-make sure to use your time to slowly perfect any quick parts in your music. Then, practice the entire solo under tempo, at a slow speed Once all the notes and rhythms are correct, you may slowly speed up the tempo.
3. Sight-reading You will be given music you have never seen before, and you'll have a few minutes to look it over. Then, you will play it for the judge, from start to finish as perfectly as you can.
You can practice sight-reading and become good at it! Every day, make sure to choose an exercise from "Accent" that you've never played before...study it for 2 minutes, then try to play it perfectly.
You'll be surprised at how quickly you learn to sight-read!
